Andorra la Vella

Introduction

Andorra la Vella is the capital of Andorra, one of the smallest countries in the world. The town is connected by road to nearby Spain and France and shares in the cultures of both countries.

Geography

Andorra la Vella lies in the narrow Gran Valira valley, on the southern slopes of the Pyrenees. The Valira and the Valira del Norte rivers meet nearby.

Economy

Andorra la Vella is popular with tourists because of its scenic beauty and opportunities for winter sports. The town is a retail shopping center for goods imported from other countries in Europe and from Asia.

History

Andorra la Vella was long isolated from the outside world. Its modernization began in the 1930s with the construction of carriage roads. Its population increased after World War II as a result of the growth of the tourist industry. In the 1960s and 1970s Andorra la Vella was transformed from a rustic town into a busy commercial center. The General Council (Andorra's parliament) meets in the town. Population (1995 estimate), 21,984.
